Job Summary:

The City of Minneapolis Public Works Department currently has five openings for an Engineering Technician II in the following divisions: Surface Water & Sewers and Water Treatment & Distribution. The eligibility list created by this posting will be available to any division seeking to fill an Engineering Technician II over a 3 month period.

Surface Water & Sewers (Four vacancies): 1901 East 26th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55404. Perform paraprofessional civil engineering work and other related duties in the field and office.

Water Treatment & Distribution (One vacancy): 4300 Marshall St. NE, Minneapolis, MN 55421. Perform computer aided drafting and design work in support of both civil engineering and electrical engineering projects.

Duties:

  • Make difficult tabulations and computations in connection with engineering project work and costs, including arithmetic and trigonometry.
  • Investigate complaints regarding City owned structures or property and make recommendations to higher level staff regarding a course of action.
  • Perform computer aided or manual engineering drafting and design work within all software programs to include, but not limited to Bentley Microstation and/or AutoCAD.
  • Prepare detailed plans, estimates, and draft specifications, plats, etc. from sketches, drawings, field notes, etc, using computer based design packages.
  • Update and maintain records for engineering division assigned to, both manual and computer based.
  • Perform field investigation work including taking traffic counts, researching City facilities, inspecting work of contractors, etc.
  • Perform field survey work, performing property, monument and preliminary and construction surveys, including use of rod and chain and automated survey equipment.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports and related technical correspondence.
  • Train and give work direction to Engineering Technicians I and interns.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Additional Job Duties and Responsibilities by Division include, but are not limited to:
Surface Water & Sewers (Locating and Asset Management):

  • Process Gopher State One Call (GSOC) tickets in the office and manage an assigned geographic area of the city performing field GSOC locating.
  • Locate underground sewer facilities and respond to requests for information from excavators and respond to emergency locates on a city wide basis.
  • Using Maximo asset management software or ARC GIS software; report discrepancies between GIS data and real world conditions found while performing locate duties.
  • Using field notes and other means, update layers of Sewer GIS database.; GIS (ArcGIS 10.2) and create work completed reports.
  • Create maps for analysis and presentations using ARC (GIS) software and  programs.
  • Working with Sewer Foremen and Route crews to arrange for traffic Control as needed to perform locating on busy arterial and collector streets.

Water Treatment & Distribution: 

  • Create civil and electrical engineering drawings using computer-aided drafting software.
  • Support the design and development of construction documents (e.g. drawings and specifications), wiring and layout diagrams, construction cost estimating, computer aided documentation of automatic controlled processes and reviewing of third party plans and permits.
  • Process of Gopher State One Call tickets.
  • Assist with updating GIS systems, report writing, data entry, processing and analysis, in-plant or field data collection.
  • Assist with Records information management initiatives.
  • Occasional field work including, but not limited to construction inspection and observation, corrosion control system monitoring and reporting, surveying and locates of water or electrical lines will also be required.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Eighteen months post high school training in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent.

Minimum Experience:

  • Two years of experience performing similar duties.

Equivalency:

  • An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be considered.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Valid Driver’s License.
