Job Summary & Duties:
Applied Ecological Services, Inc., a leader in innovative ecological solutions to land use restoration, design and planning, has an immediate opening for a Remote Sensing Intern. This position will be based out of our office near Madison, WI (Brodhead, WI).
Independently collect and evaluate geographic data. Use remote sensing software packages to process satellite images and aerial photos and provide accurate interpretations. Assist remote sensing scientist by providing support for a remote sensing research project focused on standing crop biomass/net primary productivity and land cover and vegetation classification in grazing lands in the Southeastern United States.
Qualifications:
- Advanced level students in Bachelor’s Degree (B.S.) program or student in Master’s Degree (M.S.) programs, with majors in imaging science (or relevant engineering major), computer science, atmospheric science, or geography.
- Expertise in remote sensing application using aerial and satellite data in ERDAS Imagine, ENVI, eCognition, QGIS, and/or other image analysis and processing software.
- Work with images from many satellite sensors, such as Landsat, Sentinel-1/2/3, SPOT-6/7, GeoEye-1, WorldView-2/3/4, Pléiades, TripleSat, RapidEye, and GaoFen-2, where you will carry out the radiometric and geometric corrections of digital imagery.
- Critical steps of image processing could include atmospheric correction with radiative transfer models, panchromatic sharpening, georeferencing and orthorectification, mosaicing, multi-sensor image fusion, cloud and cloud shadow masking, haze minimizing and removal, resampling, enhancement, as well as transformation.
- After image processing, assist with land cover classification and derivation of vegetation biophysical and biochemical properties.
- Experience and knowledge working with ESRI tools including Advanced Editing, Geocoding, Georeferencing, Raster Calculators, Topology, Labeling, and Data Driven Pages.
- Ability to self-start, research and build understanding of remote sensing or GIS capabilities and techniques.
