Environmental Compliance – GIS Data Developer

Job Summary & Duties:

This position functions under the supervision of the Director of Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) in the Division of Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M). This position provides support to the environmental compliance program through assistance in the development of an Environmental Information Management System (EIMS) as well as the collection of pertinent data for that system.

The UW-Madison EIMS will store data necessary to demonstrate the comprehensive compliance efforts untaken across the EH&S environmental compliance program. Included as a part of the system will need to be the relevant facility data that dictates the type of compliance efforts needed. This position will help to develop the needed information through the consolidation of existing data, the collection of data not already gathered, and the determination of the data not readily known but needed to make the appropriate level of compliance effort decisions. Because the diverse aspects of effort undertaken to achieve compliance across the environmental compliance program are performed by many diverse groups across FP&M and campus, excellent interpersonal skills are needed for the collection of the pertinent information as a part of this position.

Qualifications:

In addition, to facilitate the organization of this data, the UW-Madison EIMS will utilize both database and geospatial software platforms. As a result, the understanding of Microsoft Access and ESRI ArcGIS software will be necessary for a successful effort. Critical thinking skills for interpreting compliance requirements and applying that understanding to the types of data needed for collection and storage within the EIMS will also be important. To help determine what information is needed for the EIMS and how to best acquire the identified data from the campus stakeholders, the position will work closely with the EH&S Environmental Compliance Specialist.
