Job Summary:
The Web Informatics and Mapping (WIM) Group of the Upper Midwest Water Science Center (WMWSC), designs, develops, and hosts internet mapping applications and geospatial tools in support of the USGS mission. Although predominantly federal, WIM’s customers and cooperators also include state and international government organizations.
This position serves as a GIS Specialist for the WIM group in the Upper Midwest Water Science Center.
Duties:
- Utilizes Geographic Information System techniques to provide a better understanding of certain variables in a specified geographic location.
- Extracts data from GIS software and uses varying analysis methods to arrive at results.
- Recommends appropriate reactionary strategies in response to GIS analysis. Provides maps and data sets to clients to supplement analysis.
- Develops geospatial applications using standardized toolsets
- Provides technical and project guidance to other contractors and USGS.
Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
- Requires 1-2 years of experience in GIS or a related field.
- High School Diploma required
- Familiarity with GIS software and toolsets (i.e. ArcGIS)
- Must have a valid driver’s license for local travel if required
Additional Qualifications:
- Must be able to perform a wide-range of basic duties including: data discovery, data analysis, geospatial application and GIS tool development, data management, and policy and programmatic support.
- Must have knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures with the GIS field
- May require travel depending on program requirements
