Job Summary:

The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) is looking for a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Research Intern. DPI is currently reviewing historical documentation of school district boundary changes and working to maintain recently updated, statewide, school district boundary spatial datasets. DPI is looking for a research intern to assist in reviewing historical school district reorganization orders, checking the accuracy of current school district boundaries, and developing databases that allow for querying of historical land information.

The intern will make customized geographic information systems layers and manipulate data to serve a variety of purposes. They will interpret maps and historical land information, manipulate and understand digital land data, develop and manage data entered into a databases, and prepare raw geospatial data for use in building maps.

The intern will work closely with the GIS Technician in the Division of Libraries and Technology and will also interact with a School Administration Consultant responsible for school district reorganizations.

Potential candidates must be in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or certificate in GIS. We are interested in candidates who are self-motivated and can work independently.

Duties:

  • Improve data quality via research, investigation, and documentation. Sharing errors with counties and other data specialists for the purpose of correcting data.
  • Improve land information records by:
    • Developing general-purpose and spatial databases to store historical records and make data queryable
    • Making databases available to counties, municipalities, and other government agencies
  • Collaborate with other agency GIS specialists to improve geographic and attribute quality of parcel data.
  • Document processes for updating data for future use.
  • Build maps and transform geographic data for a variety of services

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have at least 6 months experience working in ArcMap and/or QGIS and are able to update, clean, merge, edit, validate, create, and manage geospatial features and metadata.
  • Candidates must have strong organizational skills.
  • Looking for candidates with experience with Model Builder and/or Python.
