Job Summary & Duties:

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hiring a GIS Specialist to work within our Division of Forestry, located at 101 S. Webster St, Madison. The Division of Forestry works in partnership to administer programs that protect and sustain our forested lands throughout the state, combining a variety of expertise to help meet the many demands on the forest both today and for many years to come.

This position works primarily using applications to analyze geospatial / remotely sensed data, solve problems, create solutions and facilitate decision making for the Division of Forestry (FR). The FR GIS Specialist is an internal and external consultant for staff, leadership, inter-divisional teams, and partner groups for their area of expertise.

This position maintains contemporary knowledge and expertise by staying abreast of current research and maintaining an effective professional network. The position analyzes new or emerging geo-spatial and remote sensing technologies and provides guidance to the division’s management concerning specific information systems that support the forestry division’s business needs. Additionally, the position assures that forestry IT applications meet department and enterprise standards.

Qualifications:

Required

  • Utilizing ESRI’s ArcGIS technologies, including experience customizing web mapping applications (e.g. map service development/management, custom tool development) and creating vector and raster data
  • Project management, creating project timelines, developing project plans, creating and reviewing requests for contracts, managing external contractors, tracking development progress, status reporting, and budgets
  • Database management, creation, and maintenance, including knowledge of Oracle, ArcSDE and SQL

Preferred

  • Working as part of a complex technical project team defined as 3 or more technical staff and a business representative on a project serving more than 100 customers
  • Experience serving as an internal point of contact (or subject matter expert) providing GIS consultation and support to natural resource professionals
  • Relevant work experience in a Natural Resources field
