Job Summary:

Seasonal casual position responsible for supporting the daily GIS needs of the Public Works Department with development, maintenance and implementation of the City’s Geographic Information System. Performs tasks related to creating, updating, and formatting maps and figures to meet departmental requests, including data entry and maintenance of GIS related databases. Generally receives work direction from the Public Works GIS Technician.

Duties:

  • Performs routine data management tasks associated with the City’s public infrastructure GIS; including but not limited to data entry, record plan maintenance, and capital improvement planning.
  • Achieves a dedicated understanding of relational databases as it pertains to enterprise asset management software (Cartegraph) in conjunction with ESRI’s (ArcGIS) software.
  • Maintains accurate record keeping and performs edits to databases associated with public improvement projects. Projects include installation of streets, sidewalks and trails, water mains, sanitary sewers, storm drainage systems, and improvements to water resources infrastructure.
  • Assists with mapping and data analysis functions to aid in satisfying the City’s Capital Improvement Program.
  • Employs fundamental cartographic techniques to meet mapping requests of various divisions within the Public Works Department in a timely manner.
  • Acquires, downloads, and extracts GPS data to be integrated with existing GIS datasets.
  • Assists with Engineering Division duties.
  • Performs other duties consistent with the responsibilities of the position as assigned by the City.

Qualifications:

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary program in Cartography, GIS, Geography, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate Geographic Information Systems.
  • Knowledge and experience with ESRI ArcGIS and Microsoft Office software.
  • Demonstrated organization skills, attention to detail and ability to perform assignments under minimal direction.
  • Ability to communicate with the public, staff, and elected officials in a courteous, positive, and professional manner.

Preferred

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program in Cartography, GIS, Geography, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS Online.
  • Advanced proficiency in GIS software.
