Job Summary & Duties:

The position exists to provide technical assistance and leadership in land surveying, mapping and computer aided drafting in one or more of the following areas: land surveying, civil engineering design, construction, mapping and computer aided drafting to the Division of Lands and Minerals, DNR sponsors, other government surveying offices (county and state) and private land surveying firms.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Performing boundary and topographic field survey work.
  • Performing survey computations and mapping.
  • Performing survey research and document preparation including Certificates of Survey, Certificates of Location Government Corner, Survey Reports and Legal Descriptions.
  • Serving as an advisor and technical expert to internal and external customers.
  • Leading survey technicians in field and office assignments.

Qualifications:

Required

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Land Surveying or a closely related field.
  • Two years of professional land surveying experience in boundary surveys, topography survey, construction staking and mapping.
  • Applicants must be certified as a Land Surveyor-in-Training with the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience and Interior Design.
  • High-level of oral and written communication skills through speeches, writing reports and answering correspondence to effectively work with team members, a variety of DNR professionals, and the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear, concise technical notes and descriptions when preparing survey maps and reports.
  • Demonstrated ability in computer-aided drafting and experience and skills in operation of AutoCAD and other technical software packages.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Public Land Survey System.

Preferred 

  • Field experience as a Survey Party Chief.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills sufficient to lead projects and act as a lead worker on a survey team.
  • Skilled in the operation of Trimble GNSS and robotic total stations.
  • Advanced knowledge in AutoCAD Civil 3D and ESRI mapping applications, including the ability to develop templates, linework code sets, description key sets and shapefile creation.
