Job Summary:
The State of Wisconsin Department of Health Services GIS Team seeks a paid intern (limited term employee) to assist with GIS data development, ongoing data maintenance and documentation, data conversions, web map system development, and a variety of other functions. The successful candidate is assured hands-on exposure to many facets of GIS in a state government setting. Work hours and schedule may be flexible. Work hours may be up to 20 hours per week on average. A student internship arrangement is available. Start date is as soon as possible. Pay range is $18-20/hour.
Duties:
- Develop and maintain a spatial data portal environment.
- Re-project, convert, edit, or create geographic data as necessary using ArcGIS, and/or QGIS.
- Assist with documentation of GIS program guidelines, how-to manuals, standards, spatial data inventory, etc.
- Assure GIS spatial, attribute, and metadata quality.
- Prepare GIS data and cartographic layouts for various health services programs.
- Participate in creation and maintenance of a wide variety of spatial data sets.
- Assist with testing and quality control for geocoding processes.
- Work with desktop and web-based geospatial applications including ArcGIS, QGIS, ArcGIS Online, CartoDB, and similar.
- Research and evaluate geospatial tools, methods, and applications.
- Frequent communication and documentation of progress will be required.
Qualifications:
Required
- Ability to learn new software and methods and solve problems.
- Attention to detail and accuracy when editing spatial features and attributes.
- Coding skills including HTML and preferably Python.
- Experience using relational databases – e.g. Microsoft Access, SQL Server, PostgreSQL/PostGIS.
- Understanding of concepts including projections, datums, and coordinate systems.
- Knowledge and ability to accurately document complex technology processes and protocols.
- Ability and desire to organize data and map layers.
- Understanding of basic GIS principles.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and Adobe products.
- At least basic knowledge of and experience with web-based mapping systems.
- Proven ability to work well independently and in collaboration with others.
- Excellent sense of cartographic principles and design elements.
- Fluency with Esri ArcGIS 10.x suite of products.
- Familiarity with spatial metadata standards.
- Desire to provide outstanding quality spatial data services to a variety of programs and staff.
- Possess excellent writing and verbal communications skills.
- Applicants without relevant course work or work experience in GIS will not be considered.
- A criminal background check is required prior to an employment offer.
Preferred:
- Ability to provide 1st level support to desktop GIS users.
- Familiarity with geocoding methods and services.
- Experience with geoprocessing, preferably with ESRI Model Builder.
- Geodatabase experience, including creation of domains and data model development.
- Familiarity with Python, PHP, HTML, XML, JavaScript, Python, Visual Basic and/or similar programming languages.
