Job Summary:
AECOM in Minneapolis, Minnesota is looking for a GIS Specialist, Cultural Resources to be based in AECOM’s office in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The position is responsible for building, maintaining, modifying and using geographic information systems (GIS) to support business processes and to meet client driven requirements. This includes utilizing desktop and enterprise GIS software, manipulation and consumption of geospatial databases, and utilization of mobile and spatially enabled devices. It also includes performing analysis on spatial data, interpreting and mapping results, developing custom application, and providing user support.
Duties:
- Under supervision of the Cultural Resources Department, translates and inputs existing data, including hard-copy maps, topographic maps, site plans, electronic maps and Global Positioning System (GPS) data, into a common format.
- Uses software to present map-based information.
- Factors in differences in map projections and overlays information from different sources.
- Organizes and presents tabular data supporting electronic map data.
- Develops data sets and maps.
- Maintains computerized data.
- Supports end users.
- May collect field data.
- May conduct needs assessment.
- Enters data into Geographic Information Systems (GIS) databases using techniques such as coordinate geometry, keyboard entry of tabular data, manual digitizing of maps, scanning and georeferencing of images, automatic conversion to vectors and conversion of other sources of digital data.
- Maintains or modifies existing GIS databases.
- Reviews existing or incoming data for currency, accuracy, usefulness, quality or completeness of documentation and metadata.
Qualifications:
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in anthropology/archaeology, geography, environmental science, planning, engineering, computer science or related field. Or demonstrated equivalent combination of education, skills, knowledge, abilities and experience.
- Experience with an Archaeological field school and/or with three Archaeological field projects.
- 2+ years’ relevant experience.
- Prior experience assisting archaeological field staff with implementing fieldwork protocols, data collection, field logistics.
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of the execution of archaeological surveys.
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Must pass a State and Federal criminal history/security background check; many projects/ clients are security sensitive.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
Preferred
- Master’s Degree highly desirable.
- Familiarity with cultural resource management protocols and familiarity with federal and state laws and regulations for cultural resources and historic preservation including, but not limited to, Section 106, NEPA, and Section 4(f).
- Performs assignments designed to develop professional work knowledge and abilities, requiring application of standard scientific techniques, procedures and criteria in carrying out tasks.
