Job Summary:

The City of Madison Finance Department is seeking a qualified part-time Analytics Intern to assist with data analysis and dashboard development to advance the work of Results Madison. Results Madison is a performance management system that evolved out of the What Works Cities initiative and is intended to connect the service the City provides with the outcomes that matter most to residents. What Works Cities is a national initiative to help 100 midsize cities enhance their use of data and evidence to improve services, inform local decision making, and engage residents. This internship is a part-time experience that begins in the Winter of 2019. The objective of the internship is to encourage talented individuals with an interest in public service, performance management, and data analytics, to gain practical work experience in this field. Candidates who thrive in quantitative learning environments who believe that innovation drives results should apply. It is expected that the intern will bring his or her full range of knowledge and skills to the position.

Duties:

The individual selected for this internship will assist the Data Projects Coordinator with the coordination and execution of agency engagements throughout the City to implement Results Madison. The Intern will also work with agency contacts on ad-hoc projects as part of the Department’s emerging focus on innovation in Madison’s budget process and the promotion of a data-informed culture throughout the City. Key responsibilities will include:
  • Review and refine the Dataset Inventory for various City agencies
  • Support the development of performance measures for various City agencies, including research on best practices and peer-city benchmarks
  • Assist in designing and implementing research-based assessments and data evaluation projects
  • Analyze data availability for proposed agency performance measures, and assist in identifying potential improvements to data collection and management processes
  • Assist in the development of customized Power BI performance dashboards for Agencies
  • Support data efforts throughout the City through participation in training, office hours, and/or analytics projects
  • Analyze data storage and reporting requirements, evaluate options for improved efficiency of data management, and recommend/implement improvements
  • Formal report out to senior City management
  • Perform other research and analysis projects as needed

Qualifications:

Applicants should be in the process of completing, a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in business, public administration, public policy, economics, accounting, statistics, political science, urban studies, or operations research from an accredited college or university. Applicants who have completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Summer or Winter of 2018 in any of the above fields will also be considered.

Key Requirements Include:

  • Knowledge of performance management and managing for results
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Excel or other visualization/analytic tools
  • Advanced statistical knowledge
  • Ability to analyze, present, and explain data graphically
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships
  • Proven problem solver
  • Strong interpersonal/communication skills
  • Ability to give and receive constructive criticism
  • Ability to maintain adequate attendance
Familiarity with computer programming, GIS, R, and SQL are preferred but not required.
