Job Summary:

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is looking to a GIS Technician to work in our Water Evaluation Section. The WDNR Water Quality Bureau Evaluation Section assesses the health of Wisconsin lakes and streams by analyzing monitoring data, estimating sources of pollution, and developing tools for implementing practices for improving and/or protecting future water quality. This position provides GIS support in the Water Quality Bureau for maintenance, development, and technical support of computer applications related to water quality improvement.

Duties:

50%

Assist with development and maintenance of web-based interactive map viewers managed by the Water Resources program, including the Watershed Restoration Viewer, the Water Condition Viewer, and the Surface Water Data Viewer. Create attractive cartographic products for publishing GIS data as web map services, and write supporting metadata. Query WDNR spatial databases for appropriate datasets for map service publication. Apply development, testing, acceptance, and production model of software development to coordinate map viewer and map service deployment.

Provide technical support for water-quality improvement software products, including the Erosion Vulnerability Assessment on Agricultural Lands (EVAAL), and Pollutant Load Ratio Estimation Tool (PRESTO and PRESTO-Lite). Submit software issues to development team as bugs arise. Commit and push bug fixes to development versions of software. Collaborate on product improvement efforts through optimization of code, addition of functionality, and model refinement.

Qualifications:

Required 

  • Proficiency with geographic information systems (GIS) is required, both in practice and theory.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience managing and completing projects to meet customer needs and timelines.

Preferred 

  • A strong working knowledge of a programming language and/or databases.
  • Proficiency with either Python or R programming languages.
  • Working knowledge of spatial databases, SQL and/or ST Geometry.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of GIS server technology and spatial data viewers.
  • Experience creating publication-quality analytical graphics.
