Job Summary:

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is looking to a GIS Technicians to work in our Water Quality Program.

The WDNR Water Quality Bureau Evaluation Section assesses the health of Wisconsin lakes and streams by analyzing monitoring data, estimating sources of pollution, and developing tools for implementing practices for improving and/or protecting future water quality. This position provides GIS support in the Water Quality Bureau and Runoff Management Section for development of Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL) to restore impaired waters, and tools to help guide the implementation of water quality improvement projects such as 9-element (9E) watershed plans.

Duties:

50%

Provide GIS support for development of NE Lakeshore TMDL and TMDLs in other watersheds to be determined. Use satellite-derived imagery for characterizing landcover and land-use practices, such as crop rotation and tillage practices. Create publication-quality maps that communicate information related to TMDLs, 9E watershed plans, and agricultural performance standards.

50%

Provide GIS support for implementing TMDLs and 9E watershed plans. Run GIS-based erosion analysis tool (EVAAL) and/or similar tools for the NE Lakeshore TMDL, the Upper Fox/Wolf River TMDL, and the Wisconsin River Basin TMDL to help watershed managers prioritize efforts to reduce non-point source pollution. Create EVAAL soil erosion risk and crop-rotation/land-use maps for selected watersheds.

Qualifications:

Required 

  • Proficiency with geographic information systems (GIS) is required, both in practice and theory.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience managing and completing projects to meet customer needs and timelines.

Preferred

  • A strong working knowledge of a programming language and/or databases.
  • Proficiency with either Python or R programming languages.
  • Working knowledge of spatial databases, SQL and/or ST Geometry.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of GIS server technology and spatial data viewers.
  • Experience creating publication-quality analytical graphics.
