Job Summary:

Selected applicant will be employed by Northland College, but will be working at the National Park Service’s Great Lakes Inventory & Monitoring Network office in support of a maritime vegetation monitoring project.

Duties:

The technician will be assisting in the long-term land cover change program. The job will entail validating thousands of disturbance polygons generated by an automated process (LandTrendr) using the Landsat satellite archive (1984-Present). The validation process will be performed in the office using ArcMap and Google Earth. We use multiple information sources to help inform our validation interpretation. Sources of information include high-resolution airphotos, Landsat spectral information, and tasseled cap transformed Landsat images. The geographic areas being validated will include Isle Royale National Park and adjacent lands in and around Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Other tasks during the summer will include data management tasks such as quality assurance/quality checking and data entry.

Qualifications:

Applicants will be rated on the following:

  • Amount of experience with airphoto and satellite interpretation
  • Level of experience with ArcMap
  • Programming experience in Python and R is a plus but not necessary
  • Attention to detail
  • Communication skills
