Job Summary:
Performs intermediate level work providing compilation, maintenance, operation and assists with the assessment of a department Geographic Information System (GIS) and related programs. Maintains spatial and attribute data, facilitates data capture, and provides map design, production, and spatial data modeling. Builds GIS applications, provides technical assistance to users, and assists less experienced staff. Utilizes applications such as ArcGIS Desktop, database management, office productivity, and related software. Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required.
Duties:
- Develops and maintains GIS databases that manage department assets, property data, and other spatial data to include zoning and land use.
- Assists with the documentation of business processes, technology assessments, and migration of departmental business applications and technology requirements to address a range of needs.
- Responsible for accurate creation, verification, and documentation to ensure data accuracy, continuity, and compliance with applicable federal, state, and regional standards.
- Assists with GIS technical support to perform second level triage of problems, to correct system data or software problems, and to involve higher level staff of issues as appropriate.
- Utilizes the geographic information system and related applications for production, extraction, editing, and assessment of geospatial and related attribute data to create maps, reports, and other communication tools for the purpose of enabling geographic planning and analysis.
- Imports and exports data to computer aided drafting applications such as AutoCAD. Joins GIS data with data from other non-spatial applications to provide and maintain spatial references to the non-spatial system(s).
- Works with department personnel in assessing their geospatial data and development needs. Evaluates and recommends possible solutions for meeting these needs.
- Provides GIS integration between systems, platforms, and applications. Coordinates and implements the exchange and conversion of GIS data with other departments, outside agencies, and the general public.
- Documents and updates training materials, provides training, and provides other technical assistance to staff regarding use of GIS applications.
Qualifications:
An Associate’s Degree in Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science, Information Technology, Geography, Cartography or a directly related field, AND two years of progressively responsible experience. Experience must include work in a majority of the following areas: develop and maintain GIS databases; utilize GIS and related applications to create maps; join GIS data with data from other non-spatial applications; perform integration between systems, platforms, and applications; and use of structured programming languages common to the GIS field.
OR
A combination of four years of education and progressively responsible experience. Education must include at least 20 credits in Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science, Information Technology, Geography, or Cartography or a directly related field. Experience must include work in a majority of the following areas: develop and maintain GIS databases; utilize GIS and related applications to create maps; join GIS data with data from other non-spatial applications; perform integration between systems, platforms, and applications; and use of structured programming languages common to the GIS field.
OR
A Bachelor’s Degree in Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science, Information Technology, Geography, Cartography or a directly related field.
