Job Summary:

Research Analyst Intermediates conduct studies in a specialized field of research by using descriptive, inferential, and other statistical techniques, available information resources and specialized knowledge of program operations to complete specific, assigned projects/reports which require the application and interpretation of policy; performs related work as required.  This position will focus on completing Native Plant Community mapping of forested wetlands.

The position will create mapping projects of approximately 20,000 upland acres for areas staff and map wetland plant communities on state lands administered by the Division of Forestry delineating wetland native plant communities primarily by photo interpretation within an ArcGIS environment with supporting spatial data.

Qualifications:

Required

This is a full time unclassified position with anticipated duration of three years.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources or Earth Science discipline and two (2) years of professional experience in natural resources and GIS.
  • Knowledge of native plant community classifications.
  • Knowledge of how wetland native plant communities appear on aerial photography sufficient to accurately delineate different kinds of wetland communities.
  • Knowledge of geospatial data layers sufficient to understand landscape features correlated with wetland native plant communities such as topography, drainage, soils, forest inventory, and other wetland classifications.
  • Knowledge of GIS techniques and applications used in natural resources sufficient to create maps of wetland native plant communities.
  • The ability to work as a team member to maintain the native plant community geodatabase, and assist with field assignments necessary for mapping and quality control.
  • The ability to identify wetland trees, shrubs, and plants of Minnesota sufficient to field-verify native plant communities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including ability to write reports, explain methodologies and processes, and deliver presentations to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel software or similar software for report writing and presentations.
  • Ability to follow complex instructions, apply rules consistently, and pay attention to detail.

Preferred

  • Advanced experience with ArcGIS software.
  • Knowledge of Department and Division policy, procedure and operating guidelines; State of Minnesota statutes pertaining to natural resources management; statistically sound survey techniques.
  • Broad range of experiences with all programs administered by the Division of Forestry statewide with an emphasis on the major field operations programs: State and Private Land Management and Resource Protection with an emphasis on silviculture and forest management.
