Job Summary:
Stantec’s Water group has an exciting opportunity for a GIS Specialist in our Chicago, Illinois office. This position will support GIS analysis, database development and map production efforts in support of water resources projects, including providing mapping support for our National FEMA Production and Technical Services (PTS) contract. Duties:
- Production of FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) and related geospatial databases
- Develop FEMA Flood Risk products and performing flood risk assessments
- Elevation data processing and manipulation, including LiDAR and Digital Elevation Models (DEMs)
- Create and manipulate database records and facilitate the use of emerging online platforms
- Cartography and map development
- Spatial analysis and geodatabase population
- Support engineers in hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, and floodplain mapping;
- Communication and collaboration with the project team, project managers, clients, local communities; and
- Developing official correspondence for communities
Qualifications:
- Experience in GIS, including cartographic design, GIS map creation, geodatabase maintenance / design, and feature/attribute editing
- Strong verbal and written communication skills via phone, email, and in person to internal and external clients
- Passion for geography, GIS, technology, and information communication
- Detailed oriented individual with ability to effectively juggle multiple tasks, concurrently, while maintaining a high level of quality
- Familiarity with the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and FEMA flood mapping and mitigation programs (RiskMAP) is preferred
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and collaborative environment
- Bachelors’ degree in environmental science, Geography, Geomatics Engineering or related field with demonstrated GIS training or coursework
- Minimum 0-2 years of experience in GIS, including database maintenance / design and programming using JavaScript, Python, and SQL
