Job Summary:

The Natural Resources/GIS Intern assists the Natural Resources Technician and Engineering staff with planning, administration, and implementation of programs relating to water resources, upland habitat management, and forestry.  The position will also assist with general engineering projects and GIS work. The Natural Resources/GIS Intern reports to the Public Works Director.

Duties:

  • Assist in the implementation of the City’s NPDES Phase II Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan. Including pond inspections and erosion and sediment control inspection.
  • Assist with native prairie management work and planning, vegetation surveys and invasive species control.
  • Assist with the ongoing maintenance of citywide Geographic Information System (GIS) data and utilize GIS software to develop, create, maintain, edit, update and analyze citywide GIS databases.
  • Assist with implementation of the City’s natural resources outreach and education efforts including developing and distributing educational materials, meeting with residents to address issues, and developing content for city communications.
  • Manage rain gardens and native plant gardens, including weed control, mulching, and working with contractors.
  • Assist with the implementation of the City’s Emerald Ash Borer Management Plan, which includes assessing ash tree conditions, outreach efforts, and managing the tree inventory database.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Enrollment in an accredited college or university program in a natural resources, biology, geography or engineering related field with a minimum of one year of course work completed.
  • Experience in native plant identification, habitat management, and water resources.
  • Familiarity with GIS, AutoCAD desirable.
  • Valid MN Driver’s License and a good driving record.

Internship Length:

Up to 40 hours per week for 13-15 weeks, depending on student’s school schedule.
