The Data Analyst is responsible for collecting, collating, analyzing, disseminating and evaluating crime data to discover developing trends, patterns, and changes in criminal activity, using mapping and other analytical software. The Data Analyst will also compile needed statistics to remain compliant with UCR Reporting requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. 1. Produce information related to crime trends to assist the department’s operational and administrative personnel in preventing and suppressing criminal activities, aiding the investigative process, increasing apprehension of offenders and clearing cases
  2. Prepare data used to make recommendations on manpower deployment and resource allocation
  3. Maintain statistical reports that detail the results of analysis, conclusions, and recommendations; prepare periodic statistical reports for department commanders and UCR reporting requirements
  4. Measure and forecast long-term public safety activity related to problem solving, intervention and crime reduction efforts
  5. Collect, analyze and interpret data received from various departmental units and other law enforcement agencies
  6. Maintain proficiency with GIS software and crime analysis methods and tools
  7. Assist members of the department, elected officials and Marquette community members in obtaining data from systems to which they have access
  8. Train department members on access to and analysis of data
  9. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • • Bachelor’s Degree in an academic field related to the responsibilities of the job.
    • International Association of Crime Analysts certification obtained within the first year of employment
    • 0-1 years of related experience
    • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Diplomacy and tact in dealing with sensitive situations.
    • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
    • Ability to exercise sound judgment and work independently.
    • Proficiency in law enforcement computer systems (i.e., RMS, CAD) along with statistical computer programs such as SPSS or SAS.
    • Experience working with GIS software, computer databases, relation databases spreadsheets.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
