Job Summary:
The City of Eau Claire is looking for a reliable, hardworking individual to fill a Seasonal Survey Crew Chief position. This position performs services in the field and office requiring specialized technical abilities in the preparation of plans and operation of a survey crew. This position is responsible for performing duties as assigned, employing checks to maintain a high degree of accuracy, and detecting/relating any potential construction issues to the City Surveyor. Duties include, but are not limited to: operating surveying instruments including tapes, electronic survey equipment, GPS, levels, and data-collection equipment; performing technical survey duties, such as calculating horizontal and vertical curves, setting bench marks, and more; and setting grades for construction activities.
The ideal candidate is required to have a high school diploma or equivalent, three years of survey field experience, and must maintain a valid driver’s license. Candidates are expected to be able to read and interpret construction plans, perform technical mathematical computations related to survey and design problems, have knowledge of surveying methods and procedures, and be able to work with minimal supervision.
Duties:
- Performs checks on own work to eliminate the possibility of errors and makes observations that detect potential construction problems and relates those problems to the Project Engineer or City Survey for remedial actions.
- Performs mathematical computations in solving problems relating to horizontal and vertical curves and other trigonometric problems in the layout and staking of various engineering projects.
- Performs specialized technical work on a survey crew. Operates surveying instruments including tapes, electronic survey equipment, GPS, levels, and data-collection equipment. Performs technical survey duties (calculates horizontal and vertical curves, sets bench marks, reads elevations, etc.).
- Sets grades for construction activities (buildings, sidewalks, driveways, lawns, curb and gutter, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, water, street grading, and other municipal construction activities).
- Maintains prompt, predictable, and regular physical attendance.
- Must be able to take direction and work well with others.
- Must be able to concentrate and perform accurately.
- Must be able to react to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
- Must be able to back-up fellow co-workers.
Qualifications:
The incumbent, utilizing a specialized technical knowledge, must be able to read and interpret construction plans. Performs technical mathematical computations related to survey and design problems, and horizontal and vertical curve calculations. The incumbent must have knowledge of surveying methods and procedures, and understand the functions of other design, surveying, and inspection staff. The incumbent must maintain a good working relationship with numerous contractors, engineers, surveyors, and the public. The incumbent must be able to work with minimum supervision. The incumbent is responsible for performing duties assigned and employing checks to maintain a high degree of accuracy. High School Diploma or equivalent and 3 years of Survey Field Experience required. Maintaining a valid driver’s license is required.
