Job Summary:

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is looking for an Urban and Regional Planner (GIS & Data Analyst)! This position will help the Southeast (SE) Region adopt and implement Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and analyze data to increase awareness of issues that impact, or are impacted, by transportation projects. This is a rewarding role that requires communication and organization to handle challenging and diverse work that can have broad benefits to the department.

In this position, you will be a member of a diverse team of planners, engineers and technical staff and will be responsible for analyzing and implementing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data for WisDOT’s SE Region. You will utilize GIS to do tasks such as data management, data processing, geospatial analyses, creating maps, graphics and applications, and using information to provide technical assistance on highway improvement projects. SE Region has established a GIS file repository and file structure to better organize and leverage resources, and this position will work to maintain and utilize this GIS resources using python scripts and other data model tools.

Duties:

  • Participating in multi-disciplinary teams needing GIS resources for data collection, technical analysis, and documentation of transportation system planning issues including, but not limited to: economic, freight, social, and environmental trends and impacts. •Coordinating the ongoing maintenance and support of GIS resources in SE Region.
  • Assisting the SE Region staff in conducting and coordinating analyses that support the highway improvement program, corridor studies, Traffic Impact Analyses (TIAs), special studies, and long-range planning in the Southeast Region.
  • Assisting with the management of region traffic data collection activities including, but not limited to, the manual turn count program.
  • Assisting end-users in understanding, interpreting, and applying data analyses particularly for planning, program management and project scoping activities.

Qualifications:

Required

  • Coursework in Transportation Planning and/or Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Experience coordinating work within projects, studies, teams, or comparable
  • Experience working with Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) software such as ArcGIS, ArcCatalog or similar software
  • Experience using python scripting with ArcGIS or similar software

Preferred

  • Professional experience working with GIS analysis or GIS database management and maintenance
  • Professional experience creating geospatial data
  • Experience performing policy analysis and/or program evaluation
