Job Summary:

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (District) is a regional governmental agency that provides water reclamation and flood management services for about 1.1 million people in 28 communities in the greater Milwaukee area.  The District’s mission protects public health and the environment through world-class, cost-effective water resource management, leadership, and partnership.  The District is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Project Surveyor in the Technical Services Division.

Under the direction of the Surveying Services Supervisor/Senior Project Manager, the Project Surveyor protects the District’s assets through the Digger’s Hotline program, field verification of asset records, clarification and reconciliation of deficient records, archival investigation of legacy data, and performs certification as operator qualified for protection and emergency response for the landfill gas pipeline.  The Project Surveyor will also ensure accurate data collection and base map preparation for District planning and design activities, as well as accurate layout and record data of designed facilities during the construction phase.  This position will also accurately investigate and describe District property and real estate interests through the creation of legal descriptions, easement documents, survey plats, and certified survey maps.

Duties:

  • Field verify and locate the District’s assets as required through Digger’s Hotline and landfill gas operator qualified processes.
  • Investigate and document deficient asset records using underground and above ground technology as well as confined space entry into underground facilities.
  • Acquire, or direct field staff to acquire for District, planning, preliminary engineering, and design activities; process data and produce requested CAD/Excel deliverables.
  • Layout, or direct field staff to layout, designed facilities during the construction phase and advise Construction Manager/Senior Project Manager/Contractor of potential conflicts.
  • Collect, compile, and verify as-built construction data.  If necessary, create CAD, Excel, or GIS deliverables.
  • Research or direct field staff to research field evidence as necessary to complete real estate work.
  • Establish and monitor geotechnical devices, piezometers, river level indicators, groundwater wells, and settlement points, or direct staff in completion of same.
  • Perform tasks associated with operator qualified certification on the landfill gas pipeline, which may include corrosion coupon changing, monitoring of test stations, as well as exercising of the main valves during emergency response.
  • Creation of CAD deliverables such as certified survey maps, plats or survey, and easement exhibits.
  • Complete special projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in land surveying or civil engineering technology program.
  • Four to five years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge and ability to apply survey skills to complete job assignments
  • Fully versed in all current aspects of the Survey Technician duties
  • Ability to apply good written and oral communications skills to the completion of job assignments
  • Ability to keep accurate and detailed records, field notes, and deliver industry standard work products
  • Ability to apply knowledge of OSHA confined space entry procedures to the safe completion of job duties
  • Thorough understanding of boundary survey and construction survey principles
  • Proficiency in CAD and Excel
  • Ability to proficiently operate survey equipment such as GPS units, total stations, digital and automatic levels, tripods/tribrachs, data collectors, metal detectors, underground locating devices, as well as a variety of small hand and power tools, radios, and other field equipment
  • Valid driver’s license required
