Job Summary:

This opportunity provides practical, hands-on experience during the 2019 fall semester for a student currently pursuing or a recent graduate in GIS, Geography, or a related discipline with a strong focus in GIS (e.g. Environmental Science, Planning, or Engineering). This is a part-time paid internship requiring 10-15 hours per week. Hours are very flexible but must be worked during normal business hours (Monday-Friday, 8 AM-5 PM).

Duties:

Under the supervision of the Monona Public Works Project Coordinator/GIS Specialist, the student selected for this program will perform various office and field duties while having the opportunity to observe first-hand the operation and organization of numerous departments within the City of Monona. Assignments may include:

  • Use GPS to locate Monona utilities and update GIS data to match what is actually in or on the ground.
  • Assist in tracking the maintenance of private stormwater catchment systems.
  • Perform field inspections of stormwater outfalls and develop reports.
  • Assist utility and public works crew members in the field and perform some manual tasks when necessary.
  • Contact outside entities to find property file information and regulatory requirements.
  • Communicate with Monona residents and business owners when necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a student currently pursuing or a recent graduate in GIS, Geography, or a related discipline with a strong focus in GIS (e.g. Environmental Science, Planning, or Engineering).
  • Must have an advanced knowledge of GIS software and the ability to apply geospatial analysis techniques, as well as a working knowledge of ArcMap for desktop, ArcGIS Online, ESRI Collector, ESRI Explorer, ESRI Survey 123, and ArcGIS Pro.
  • Must have some knowledge of how GPS field surveying equipment works.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain such throughout the course of the internship.
  • Ability to utilize common office software such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and email
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to walk, stand, stoop, and bend in order to work on or inspect utilities
  • Ability to work indoors and remain sedentary for extended periods of time, as well as to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to see details at close range.
