Responsibilities:
The Department of Geography at DePaul University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor with expertise in Geographic Information Science to begin fall quarter 2020. We seek a strong teacher with an active research agenda who will cover elements of our GIS curriculum while building upon and expanding our commitment to service learning and community engagement. We particularly encourage those with critical perspectives on geospatial technologies demonstrated in teaching and/or research and with a focus on the urban to apply. There are particularly exciting opportunities for working in the thematic areas of sustainable urban development, remote sensing, gentrification, environmental justice and public health.
The Department of Geography has been recognized by the AAG for its excellence in undergraduate education while also serving as home to internationally recognized scholars in urban geography, GIS, political ecology, and political geography. While the Department of Geography is an undergraduate program, the successful candidate would also teach at the graduate level in the MA in Sustainable Urban Development. DePaul is a teaching intensive university. Tenure track faculty teach a 6-course load over 3 quarters. Chicago serves as a productive laboratory for urban research, and the department has longstanding relationships with a number of community organizations through service learning and community based research. Required Qualifications:
DePaul seeks candidates with demonstrated cultural competencies to include teaching, service and research in diverse learning communities.
At the time of appointment, the candidate must: 1) possess a Ph.D. in geography or a related field; 2) have a record of peer-reviewed publication appropriate to career stage; and 3) demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with students, practitioners, and the public. The ideal candidate will also help provide vision and leadership for our GIS and urban curriculums as well as the MA in Sustainable Urban Development and establish relationships community organizations working on related issues.
Candidates will be evaluated according to a) overall quality of their academic preparation and scholarly work, b) relevance of their scholarly research to the department’s academic priorities and fields of inquiry, c) evidence of commitment to teaching and skills as a teacher, and d) strength of recommendations. Candidates will also be evaluated according to evidence of attention to cultural diversity in teaching, research, and/or service and the proven ability to contribute to the University’s commitment to equity and diversity.
