JOB SUMMARY:

Performs the day-to-day field duties necessary to provide the Planning and Land Services Department with the field information required to perpetuate the Public Land Survey System, and develop digital base map and parcel map.  Field work is the primary responsibility and office related duties secondary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Works with the County Surveyor to determine field work schedules.

Researches the necessary information in the Planning and Land Services and Register of Deeds departments to maintain and perpetuate monuments of the Public Land Survey System.

Maintains, prepares and uses surveying equipment.

Records and makes field observations.

Sets concrete survey monuments to preserve the location of the corners of the Public Land Survey System.

Uses total stations, GPS, data collectors, electronic distance meters, and steel tapes to obtain relative distance and direction between various points that define land boundaries or provide reference thereto.

Performs field investigations and surveys to support the creation and maintenance of digital base mapping, parcel mapping and Geographic Information System (GIS).

Performs mathematical computations concerning survey measurements and land records, including the applications using arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus and statistics.

Works to recover the original positions of corners of the Public Land Survey System using personal computers and relevant software.

Performs field survey work to support other county operations.

Files, indexes and plots maps and records related to the Public Land Survey System or any other land boundary within Brown County.

Assists customers in finding and retrieving filed survey documents and other survey information.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Education and Experience:
Associate Degree in Land Surveying or related field plus two years of experience in the field of surveying; or a Bachelor’s Degree in Land Surveying; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to obtain a Wisconsin Professional Land Surveyor’s license within two years of hire.

Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License
Ability to obtain Wisconsin Professional Land Surveyor’s license within two years of hire.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge and understanding of the principles of land surveying, with emphasis on field procedures.

Knowledge to interpret complex situations and apply good judgements to arrive at solutions.
Knowledge of the laws pertaining to the subdivision, restoration and preservation of the Public Land Survey System.

Knowledge of and ability to utilize a computer and the required software.

Skilled at taking legible and accurate field notes and should have the knowledge and skills necessary to operate survey equipment used by the Planning and Land Services Department.

Knowledge of mapping (CAD) software

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Lifting 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Frequent standing, walking, sitting and driving.

Using hand(s)/feet for repetitive single grasping, fine manipulation, pushing and pulling, and operating controls.

Frequent bending, twisting, squatting, and reaching; occasional climbing.

Tolerating exposure to cold, heat, noise, vibration and hazards in the work environment.

Constant working in and along highways, streets and roads.

Distinguishing sounds at various frequencies and volumes.

Distinguish people or objects at varied distances under a variety of light conditions.
