Job Summary:

We are currently seeking to fill up to 1 Land Survey internship located in St. Paul.

This position exists to provide technical and physical assistance in surveying and mapping for the Division of Lands and Minerals Survey Section. The position will provide assistance to the DNR in land acquisition and land management property boundary surveys. Additionally, the position will provide assistance in data collection required for the design and construction of trails, campgrounds, and other DNR infrastructure.

The anticipated dates for this internship is mid-May through late August. Normal days of work will be Monday-Thursday from 7:00 am-5:30 pm. Housing is not provided. This internship may require overnight travel. When traveling, lodging and transportation are provided and cost of meals will be reimbursed.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assemble detailed project information for property surveys by plotting air photos, printing GLO plats, and scanning property maps.
  • Prepare land use maps using AutoCAD Civil 3D, performing mathematical computations, and compiling and analyzing data.
  • Assist with boundary and topographic survey data by recording data, measuring angles and distances, setting up tripods, and cutting brush.
  • Operate data collector and checking computations for any possible errors.
  • Assist in establishing boundary lines of State property by flagging property corners and monuments, cutting brush, and communicating with private land owners.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • You must be a student at an accredited educational institution; AND
  • Your advisor must certify that you will either receive academic credit or fulfill an academic requirement. The signature of a sponsoring academic instructor is required prior to beginning an internship.
    AND
  • Majoring in Land Surveying or closely related field.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather and environmental conditions.
  • Strong organizational skills sufficient to compile data.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D sufficient to prepare maps.
  • Mathematical skills sufficient to make accurate calculations and identify errors.
  • Navigation skills sufficient to travel through the field.
  • Ability to use standard land survey data collection tools (i.e. total station, automatic level, RTK GPS, and electronic metal locator).
  • Excellent human relation and communication skills sufficient to represent the position and Division in a professional, efficient, and clear manner.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of laws relative to land surveying.
  • Knowledge of land surveying, geographic information systems, boundary law, and spatial analysis.
  • Experience creating maps in AutoCAD Civil 3D.
