GIS Technician

Description:

Hennepin County is seeking a motivated Geographic Information System (GIS) Technician to join the GIS Business Services team within the Hennepin County GIS Office. The GIS Office is looking for a candidate who has a deep understanding of GIS technology, is willing to contribute ideas and learn from others, and is able to successfully collaborate with coworkers, leadership, and partners to meet the county’s critical GIS needs.

In this role, the GIS Technician’s primary responsibility will be to apply their spatial analysis and GIS expertise to help support decision making across the organization. The GIS Technician will act as the hands-on GIS expert on a variety of collaborative projects and efforts, both large and small in scope.  A secondary role of this position will be to work closely with the GIS Business Analyst to coordinate the County’s GIS collaboration efforts with partner agencies (City, County, State and other local government agencies). Additional responsibilities of this position include: creating and maintaining enterprise GIS datasets, training GIS users, and providing on-call end user support.

The Hennepin County’s GIS division is comprised of three teams; GIS Business Services (GBS), GIS Technical Services (GTS), and GIS Project Services (GPS). This position will be a member of the GIS Business Services (GBS) team and will report to the GIS Supervisor.

In this position, you will:

• Support and in some cases lead advanced GIS spatial analysis projects.
• Work closely with GIS Coordinators and Business Analyst to coordinate collaboration efforts.
• Work closely with GIS Database Administrator and Enterprise GIS Analysts to complete enterprise geodatabase tasks and analysis projects.
• Perform day-to-day data and map creation.
• Understand and be able to communicate GIS Office strategic direction.
• Participate on collaborative project teams.
• Perform on-call end user support.

Need to have:

• One of the following:
  • Associate’s/vocational/technical degree or higher in computer science, management information systems (MIS), information technology, or an approved information technology field related to the position.
  • Completion of five college/vocational technical technology courses.
  • Completion of approved IT Hennepin County internship.
  • Two years or more of information technology experience.

Nice to have: 

• Two years or more of GIS professional work experience.
• Experience working with ESRI’s ArcGIS for Desktop Software (10.x), ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online and applications.
• Knowledge of:
  • Spatial database design principles and geodatabase construction.
  • Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS), structured query language (SQL), and Microsoft SQL Server.
• Ability to:
  • Clearly present complex technical information to a variety of audiences.
  • Complete documentation procedures and metadata.
  • Work under limited supervision.
  • Work in a team environment and communicate effectively with team members.
