Metro Transit is looking for a permanent, part-time Map and Layout Designer to work collaboratively with the marketing, advertising, graphics and planning teams. Meticulous work includes creating clear, concise and functional transit maps, schedules and signage in digital and paper formats for the general public. This work also involves laying out text and copy for documents including the Ride Guide, newsletters, schedules, flyers and reports.
The Map and Layout Designer works collaboratively and closely with the Metro Transit Photographer and Graphic Designer. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Transit General Marketing Supervisor and is typically inspected upon completion for conformance with acceptance qualitative standards.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare/design/track changes to Metro’s catalog of 60+ fixed-route transit maps and schedules; 144-page ride information booklet (Ride Guide); Metro’s System Map (including more than 60 fixed-routes as well as Metro’s supplemental school service); and detour maps and information flyers.
- Write print specifications and evaluate proposals for Ride Guides, system maps, and other schedule related media, as well as various communication materials.
- Act as liaison between Metro and commercial printers by providing art direction and reviewing proofs.
- Communicate with vendors via phone and email, listen to voicemail and respond in timely manner.
- Collaborate with marketing and planning teams to create maps and schedules that are accurate, coherent and functional.
- Design/layout passenger information posters, flyers, and other passenger notices in multiple language formats.
- Design/layout employee and passenger newsletter.
- Prepare/design/track changes to catalog of 20+ passes, tickets, transfers, and other Metro fare media.
- Oversee yearly update and mass order of all tickets, transfers and other Metro fare media.
- Coordinate with Metro unlimited ride pass partner businesses to produce individualized pass design. Coordinate/oversee pass designs submitted by unlimited ride pass partners. Work with pass partner graphic staff to create individualized business pass design.
- Work/coordinate with marketing and advertising team to place paid advertising on Metro fare items.
- Design/layout marketing and marketing promotion materials in multiple language formats including advertisements.
- Design/maintain a library of communication and promotion graphics for Metro’s website, social media, digital screens and other electronic communication efforts.
- Collaborate with marketing team to create visuals and documents that clear, concise and on-brand.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Two (2) years experience involving geographical information system (GIS) operations, mapping and/or drafting.
- Such experience would normally be supplemented by at least four (4) courses in graphic arts and must include training and/or experience involving the use of computers (and related software) to perform a graphics layout work.
- Degree in Geography, Cartography, GIS, Graphic Arts (emphasis in technical layout), Marketing or similarly related field from an accredited two (2) or four (4) year college. Spring 2020 graduates will be considered and are encouraged to apply.
If an applicant does not possess the specific requirements outlined above, HR will review the application materials to determine if the applicant possesses the following equivalent experience:
Two (2) years experience in applying the following:
- Print and digital design skills.
- Computerized commercial and graphic arts techniques, materials and practices.
- Computers and related computer software, such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat) and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
Familiarity with the following:
- GIS software.
- Printing process including paper and printing requirements, costs, file preparation and color separation.
- Digital advertising design.
- Marketing and advertising principles and techniques.
