GENERAL FUNCTION

Under general supervision, the incumbent performs services in the office and in the field requiring specialized technical abilities in the preparation of plans and operation of a survey crew of various municipal construction activities.  Performs mathematical computations through geometry and trigonometry.

POSITION SCOPE

The Engineering Department is responsible for design, supervision, field layout and inspection of various projects around the City.  The incumbent performs a variety of tasks in the field with survey work. The incumbent, utilizing specialized technical knowledge, must be able to read and interpret construction plans and perform technical mathematical computations related to survey and design problems, and horizontal and vertical curve calculations.  The incumbent must have knowledge of surveying methods and procedures, and understand the functions of other design, surveying, and inspection staff.  The incumbent must maintain a good working relationship with numerous contractors, engineers, surveyors, and the public.  The incumbent must be able to work with minimal supervision. The incumbent is responsible for performing duties assigned and employing checks to maintain a high degree of accuracy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs checks on own work to eliminate the possibility of errors and makes observations that detect potential construction problems and relates those problems to the Project Engineer or City Survey for remedial actions.

Performs mathematical computations in solving problems relating to horizontal and vertical curves and other trigonometric problems in the layout and staking of various engineering projects.

Performs specialized technical work on a survey crew.  Operates various types of surveying instruments including, but not limited to, Robotic Total Station, GPS, levels, and data-collection equipment.  Performs technical survey duties (calculates horizontal and vertical curves, sets bench marks, reads elevations, etc.).

Sets grades for construction activities (buildings, sidewalks, driveways, lawns, curb and gutter, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, water, street grading, and other municipal construction activities).

Prepares field-staking setup to generate construction stakeout file for self and other surveyor.

Documents and maintains daily survey notes and construction logs, transfers survey data for plan preparation, keeps legible permanent records and survey data necessary for the design, layout, construction, and measurement for municipal construction projects.  Processes field points from self and other surveyor into a CADD file for design purposes.

Maintains prompt, predictable, and regular physical attendance.

Must be able to back-up fellow co-workers.
 
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/CERTIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Possessing and maintaining a valid driver’s license is required.

3 years of Survey Field Experience is preferred.

Must be able to read and interpret construction plans, perform technicial mathematical computations related to survey and design problems, process field points from self and other surveyors into a CADD file for use in preparation of surfaces and pipe networks for engineering base plans, have knowledge of surveying methods and procedures, and be able to work with minimal supervision.
