Under the direction of the GIS Coordinator, the Geographic Information Services (GIS) Specialist performs planning, design, development, implementation, training and maintenance on a variety of countywide web based and desktop GIS applications. Performs complex analysis of GIS applications, datasets and new technologies. Aides in the creation of maps and GIS data, helps with GIS data preparation requests and performs user related work as required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position.  These duties are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Assists County departments to plan, design, develop, deploy, and maintain enterprise GIS mapping applications using the most current programming languages designed to take advantage of database architecture and system infrastructure.
  • Administration and configuration of ArcGIS Server infrastructure, including authoring/optimizing map services and managing ArcGIS Server security.
  • Administration and configuration of ArcGIS Online/ArcGIS for Portal.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of GIS data, including geodatabase design/implementation and GPS fieldwork.
  • Streamline current GIS processes using Python Scripting, models, and geoprocessing tasks.
  • Provides GIS analysis and statistics for internal and external customers in coordination with projects.
  • Works with internal and external customers on map requests.
  • Assists with the administration of the GIS computer system, including installation and maintenance of GIS software programs and upgrades.
  • Provides technical assistance to staff regarding GIS hardware and software.
  • Attend training and education to maintain professional competence and keep abreast of new developments, trends, and technology in GIS.
  • Develop and maintain respectful and cooperative working relationships.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Computer Science or closely related field of study and two years relevant work experience (or the equivalent combination of education and experience).
