General Summary

Gas Technology Institute (GTI) is adding a Manager to the Smart Utilities team. This person will lead a team of Geographic Information System (GIS) and development professionals in research and development projects featuring industry’s latest technology utilizing geospatial positioning, data analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Primary Responsibilities

The candidate selected will be responsible for maintaining a collaborative work environment, supervising and coordinating work, monitoring schedules and budgets, working with project managers, evaluating and elevating the skills of the team, and participating in completing cutting edge research in GIS, GPS, AR/VR, and other new technologies. Coordination and support with GTI’s advanced risk modeling specialists is an important aspect of the Smart Utilities role in the organization, specifically, but not limited to, pipeline infrastructure operations and the energy industry. Below is a high-level overview of some of the additional primary responsibilities:

  • Work with leadership to assist in establishing strategic direction for the group
  • Identify industry trends and maintain relationships with relevant stakeholders
  • Facilitate the activities of the team regarding resource planning, workflow and quality
  • Acts as a resource to the team regarding technical direction
  • Work closely with project managers to maintain project schedules and budgets
  • Provide feedback to employees on work performance and technical skills development
  • Coordinate with other GTI groups on behalf of the GIS team on multi-discipline projects
  • Act as principal investigator for highly technical projects utilizing team members as needed
  • Communicate with clients/stakeholders on project requirements and work with project managers to meet sponsors’ needs
  • Generate and document ideas for GIS related research projects
  • Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
  • Deep subject matter expertise in geospatial positioning, data analytics, reporting, machine learning, and artificial intelligence
  • Knowledge of GNSS and GPS handheld devices
  • Knowledge of AR/VR technologies and their applications
  • Knowledge of Building Information Modeling (BIM)
  • Knowledge of scripting tools and processes
  • Strong understanding of data interoperability and coordinate systems
  • Skilled in ArcGIS Pro and data editing within the application
  • Skilled in ArcGIS Server 10.x
  • Skilled in ArcGIS online/ArcGIS Portal 10.x
  • Skilled in creating map outputs
  • Proficiency with ESRI stack tools such as Collector, Survey123, ArcScene, and Dashboards
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal) comfortability producing high-quality documentation and reporting
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines under minimum supervision
  • Ability to translate technical information into a format that is understandable and valuable to a non-technical audience
Education and Experience
  • B.S. in a science-related field with a minimum of 7 years’ experience using GIS and related technologies; M.S. or Ph.D. and a minimum of 5 years of experience
  • High-level understanding or ability to learn Amazon Web Services, MS Azure, or other cloud-based web services preferred
  • Exposure to FME Desktop a plus
  • Experience with QGIS a plus
