The GIS Specialist/Cartographer contributes to WGNHS mapping and research projects through cartography and geospatial information management. Primary responsibilities include providing GIS support for geologic mapping projects, collaborating with scientists to create and maintain map databases, and creating cartographic and visualization products. Additional duties may include assisting with GIS database maintenance, researching GIS best practices and documenting workflows, assisting with management of geospatial web maps and services, and creating scripts and models to automate common tasks. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Technical operations and collaborates with other survey staff. Please note that this position description represents a general outline of job duties and not intended to be comprehensive in nature.

Some initial goals for the position will be the following:
– Gain familiarity with geologic and hydrogeologic mapping conventions, standards, and workflow
– Work with WGNHS staff to learn the U.S. Geological Survey Geologic Map Schema (GeMS)
– Provide cartographic and GIS support for USGS-funded mapping and GeMS projects
– Work with WGNHS staff to streamline and automate data management and production of maps
– Assist in cartographic production for WGNHS publications

Qualifications

Required:
1. Experience with GIS software (especially ArcGIS)
2. Experience with graphic design software (such as Adobe Illustrator)
3. Experience with cartography
4. Knowledge of a scripting language and application to GIS automation
5. Ability to independently accomplish detail-oriented work duties, and collaboratively advance team projects
6. Strong verbal and written communication skills, willingness to share knowledge and train colleagues, and strong organizational skills

Preferred:
1. Experience using ArcGIS Pro
2. Demonstrated expertise in ArcGIS and graphic design software
3. Demonstrated cartography experience, including production of small- and large-scale maps
4. Education or experience in the geosciences, especially with geologic maps
