Associate Planner / MPO Coordinator

The City of Janesville (population 63,500), located in south-central Wisconsin, is seeking qualified candidates to fill the Associate Planner/MPO Coordinator position in its Planning Division of the Public Works Department. This full-time, exempt position performs professional and technical planning functions for the City of Janesville, including general short-range and long-range planning and transportation planning. This position also coordinates and carries out federally mandated transportation planning activities for the Janesville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). Other responsibilities include preparing technical and professional planning reports, assisting in preparing and administering grant funding proposals, reviewing site plans and land development proposals (conditional use permits, re-zonings, survey maps, plats, etc.), preparation of neighborhood plans, and special project graphic and design support. The Associate Planner reports directly to the Planning Director.

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in urban/regional planning, public administration, geography, landscape architecture, environmental studies, or a closely related field and a minimum of six (6) months of professional planning experience is required. A master’s degree is preferred. A combination of equivalent experience and education as determined by the Human Resources Office may be considered in lieu of minimum requirements.

The successful candidate will have strong knowledge of the principles and practices of urban planning, including modern land use and transportation planning concepts. Experience in report preparation, public presentations, and software applications including Microsoft Office and ArcGIS Desktop Suite is also necessary. The successful candidate must also possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.  

The salary range for this position is $56,556 – $62,641. The City offers a comprehensive benefits package.
