The University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Geography is seeking to hire a Tenure-Track Director of GIS Professional Programs (GISPP; https://geography.wisc.edu/gis/). The Director will be hired as an Assistant Professor of Geographic Information Science & Technology (GIS&T) with a 9-month academic appointment, with an additional month of summer salary plus standard opportunities for summer salary, and will begin on or after August 2022. This position will follow UW-Madison’s integrated model of research, teaching, and service, with demonstrated impact in GISPP leadership part of a successful tenure dossier. To facilitate orientation, the position will begin at the Associate Director level with reduced administrative and teaching responsibilities, with promotion to Director expected to occur approximately three years after initial hire. A Ph.D. in Geography, GIScience, or allied field is required at the time of appointment.

Strong candidates will have broad knowledge and technical skills in GIS&T, established and diverse professional networks, and a leadership vision for continued growth of the GIS Professional Programs. Candidate research can be from any area across GIS&T, including GIS, geocomputation, spatial analysis and modeling, cartography and geovisualization, and remote sensing. Programming skills and experience are preferred given the GISPP curricular emphasis on programming, geocomputing, and full stack development. We will support the candidate with a multi-year onboarding process and teaching load will be reduced relative to standard tenure-track appointments to balance leadership activities, with courses supporting both the professional and traditional undergraduate and graduate programs. We welcome candidates who can contribute to an inclusive environment, bring new perspectives on mentoring and educating students from diverse backgrounds, and value collegiality and collaboration.

Principal Duties: Leadership duties include curriculum planning and course maintenance, strategy and budget planning, staff supervision and performance review, and program advertisement and recruitment online and at industry and academic GIS conferences and events. Faculty duties include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses as well as mentoring students, conducting research, and service at a level consistent with career stage and leadership activities.
