Utilize your knowledge and skills with computers and geospatial systems as a GIS Reference Point Coder (IS Resources Support Technician Intermediate) for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Crash Records Unit. As a GIS Reference Point Coder, you will enter the locations of all motor vehicle crashes on the State Trunk Highways in Wisconsin using location information from the Wisconsin motor vehicle crash database. The data entered by the Reference Point Coding Technician is an essential tool in the accurate analysis for identifying high crash locations and highway segments used for highway safety planning. This position is headquartered at the Hill Farms State Office Building on the near west side of Madison.

Position Summary

This position is responsible for the maintenance and recording of crashes and other data elements on the State Highway Reference Point System. The Reference Point System provides reference points for crashes that occur on the State Highway System to be used for highway safety planning by state and county highway safety engineers to design safer highways. This position will also evaluate the integrity of the data in the crash database, identify and resolve incomplete or incorrect data, communicate with highway engineering personnel and enter crash information into the crash database.

This position will require some knowledge of GIS practices, IT processes, motor vehicle laws, and procedures relating to timely and accurate reference point coding of crash locations. This position must use independent judgement and analysis in performing the job functions.
