The American Geographical Society Library (AGSL) at UW-Milwaukee’s Golda Meir Library (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) seeks a part-time, paid student intern to assist with GIS and Spatial Data Services for Summer 2022 and beyond. The internship is under the supervision of the Geospatial Information Librarian. The intern will help manage a GIS data collection, assist students and researchers in finding and using geospatial data, and work on various projects utilizing geospatial technologies to increase discovery and access to AGSL collections. There are both customer service, projectbased and professional development aspects to the internship. The American Geographical Society Library—one of the premier Map and Geography collections in North America—contains over 2 million items including maps, atlases, globes, monographs, photographs, and geospatial data supporting instruction, research, and learning.

Duties include:
• Conducting reference interviews, consultations, and facilitating requests for spatial data, digital images, and printing for students, faculty, researchers, and the public
• Developing learning materials related to discovering, processing, mapping, and analyzing spatial data and the AGSL collections
• Creating or editing metadata for geospatial data and helping develop workflows for ingest, access, and discovery of geospatial data
• Archival quality map scanning using a large format scanner and printing using a large format printer
• Special projects related to the intern’s academic goals, career goals, and skills
• Performing other library tasks such as greeting visitors, giving directions, responding to e-mails, referring users to appropriate subject experts

Time, Wage, and Schedule:
15-25 hours per week at $11/hr. Student interns work a fixed schedule each week but the schedule is accommodating of class and life schedules. Partial or fully remote schedules would be considered in some circumstances. The AGSL is currently open M-F 9:00am-4:30pm, closes for federal holidays, but is open during Spring, Summer, and Winter break periods. The ideal candidate will be available to start before Summer 2022 and continue for at least the 2022-2023 academic year.

Required Qualifications: (You must meet all these criteria)
• Enrolled and in good standing at any college or university. You must be enrolled for Fall 2022 to work Summer 2022, you do not need to be enrolled in Summer courses.
• Interest in libraries, geography, and geospatial technologies
• Perform routine GIS tasks including loading, querying, and exporting data
• Perform routine tasks using a Windows PC, Microsoft Office, Office365
• Complete detailed work with a high degree of consistency and accuracy
• Respectfully and effectively work with diverse students, patrons, and staff
• Solve problems independently as well as collaboratively
• Interest in learning to use unfamiliar digital tools, software, and hardware

Desired Qualifications: (You should meet some of the following criteria)
• Graduate student or advanced undergraduate studying GIS (in any discipline), geography, cartography, or library/information science
• Intermediate or Advanced knowledge of desktop GIS and/or web GIS technology
• Experience with web development
• Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud, JavaScript, Python, XML, and/or HTML/CSS
• Experience with Git, GitHub, GitLab, and/or GitHub Pages
• Experience searching for and using geospatial data
• Proficiency in language(s) other than English
