Environmental Working Group (EWG) seeks a bachelor’s or master’s-level Senior GIS analyst to join our team in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The position is currently remote but will eventually go back to in person in the Minneapolis office at least three days per week.
EWG is a national research and advocacy organization that empowers people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment. Our Minneapolis team employs cutting edge geospatial and data analysis to help shape policy and programs in the public and private sector to achieve a healthy environment for people, with a particular focus on sustainable agriculture.
The Senior GIS Analyst will work in close collaboration with our Midwest team of researchers and analysts as well as our communications and government affairs experts to support EWG’s work to improve environmental health. The Senior GIS Analyst will secure, manage, map and analyze data to support EWG research projects with a particular focus on the effect of agricultural land use and management on water, air and environmental health.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the production of on the fly maps and other data visualizations for the Midwest Office and other departments within EWG.
- Apply remote sensing methodologies to find out what’s on the landscape in agricultural areas, such as the Midwest.
- Develop, deploy and maintain geospatial scripts, models and other processes.
- Analyze and manipulate geospatial data, with a focus on agriculture.
- Automate analytical processes and data collection to complete complex tasks.
- Optimize project data, analysis, and outputs for easy retrieval and storage.
- Write methodologies of analysis processes, and public-facing reports summarizing analysis results and policy implications.
- Communicate analysis findings and policy implications with the news media and other stakeholders.
- Collaborate with other EWG departments to develop and manage various products and projects.
- Support EWG’s advocacy goals with ongoing and new research.
- Stay informed on current agricultural environmental and public health issues and agricultural policy developments.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in geography, GIS, geospatial technology, environmental sciences or another related field.
- Knowledge or interest in agriculture and sustainable agriculture.
- At least two years of experience using ArcGIS to collect, analyze and maintain geospatial data, and creating and publishing maps.
- At least two years of experience accessing, downloading and manipulating satellite imagery.
- Background in applying remote sensing methodologies and techniques to geospatial analysis.
- Knowledge of remote sensing software, such as ENVI, ERDAS IMAGINE or ESRI products.
- Working knowledge of one or more programming languages such as SQL, Python, R, HTML or others.
- Knowledge and experience with data visualization tools and applications.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Power Point and Access).
- Strong organizational, communication and writing skills.
- Ability to quickly adapt to a fast-paced work environment with shifting priorities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in geography, GIS, geospatial technology, environmental sciences or another related field.
- Knowledge of agriculture, agricultural conservation practices and agriculture policy.
- Experience analyzing data using relational databases, specifically PostgreSQL.
- Experience in applying remote sensing methodologies related to land cover classifications, multi-spectral and multi-temporal imagery and vegetative indices such as NDVI.
- Experience automating geospatial analytical processes.
- Knowledge of enterprise GIS- ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Server.
- Proficiency creating online interactive maps with Mapbox.
- Experience creating, writing and publishing remote sensing methodologies and reports summarizing results of analyses.
