Graduate Project Assistant Position, Wisconsin State Cartographer’s Office

Salary: up to $25,808 + tuition remission

Hours/wk: Up to 20

Anticipated start date: Before fall semester, 2022 (ideally)

Duration: Up to one year

Qualifications: Graduate student in good standing, enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for the academic year.

Preferred skills and Experience: Background in geography theory and methods; Experience with GIS tools and methods; Interests/experience in flood mapping, especially social dimensions; Experience working with local government offices, preferably in Wisconsin; Experience with public outreach including understanding of best practices for communications and marketing materials; Ability to work on your own with limited supervision; Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills; Self-motivation and flexibility to work within a dynamic work environment.

Position Summary: Primary project staff for a one-year project funded by the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program. Under the direction of the project PI, use existing data sources to develop a small regional GIS database of northern Ashland county documenting attributes critical to flood exposure and vulnerability, such as infrastructure, socio-economic factors, demographics, and vulnerable facilities and populations. Carry out a needs assessment to identify layers to be included in the database. Use published dasymetric mapping techniques to re-sample data to an appropriate spatial scale. Interact with local stakeholders to ensure the database meets their needs. Help develop a simple online map app for viewing and download. Develop documentation for the project.
