Are you skilled in Cartography and interested in creating the next edition of the Official Wisconsin State Highway Map? If yes, come join the Department of Transportation as a Cartographic Specialist/Coordinator (IS Data Services Senior) located within the Division of Transportation System Development, Bureau of Technical Services.

This position may be headquartered in the following cities: Madison, La Crosse, Superior, Eau Claire, Green Bay, Wisconsin Rapids, Rhinelander and Waukesha.  

This position coordinates the Department’s Cartography Unit which is responsible for producing the Official State Highway Map, annually updating the WisDOT County Map series, leading the development of a GIS layer of existing state trunk highway right-of-way, and developing other GIS layers / products for the Surveying & Mapping Section. This position will also be responsible for leading a redesign of the State Highway Map and migrating map production from MicroStation / Bentley Maps to GIS for the 2025 edition.

Job duties require the incumbent have good technical, organizational and team skills. This position requires significant knowledge and experience in the following areas: Cartography, GIS, gathering GIS data, generalizing complex map data for midscale mapping, preparing cartographic products for printing, developing workflows, managing a project schedule, and leading a team.

Qualified applicants will have experience with all the following:

  • Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) including working with products within the ESRI suite (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online, etc.) and gathering or developing and maintaining complex GIS data.
  • Experience creating cartographic products.
  • Experience using Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator or similar graphic design programs.
