Position Summary

This position description has been prepared to assist in evaluating duties, responsibility, and skills of the position. It is not intended as a complete list of specific responsibilities and duties, nor is it intended to limit duties to those listed.

This position carries out responsibilities in the following functional areas related to land information and surveying: Provide assistance to the County Surveyor by applying sound technical skills and knowledge of surveying in broad areas of assignment, out in the field throughout Vernon County and in the Land Information Office.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Serve as a survey technician working alongside a one-person experienced survey crew
utilizing GPS, caring for and maintaining survey equipment.

Related Job Functions

  • Collect survey data, search for boundary evidence, work in a variety of (uneven) terrain and outdoor conditions.
  • Perform physical tasks such as setting stakes and monuments, clearing brush, and hiking.
  • Utilize surveying software applications to gather, retrieve and interpret important data, and perform fundamental survey computations.
  • Ability to arrange and coordinate work schedules with ability to plan, organize, and set priorities.
  • Responsible for working safely and following safety practices and standards of the organization; responsible for reporting any existing or potential safety or accident hazard.
  • Familiar with federal, state, and local agencies and their programs/coordination with county programs.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions as directed.
  • Ability to work in a pleasant and understanding manner with the general public, County officials, and other employees and maintain good working relationships.
  • Develop familiarity with principles and practices of surveying with regard to the PLSS and surveys. Considerable knowledge of land surveying concepts, procedures, guidelines, equipment, and best practices.
  • Ability to carry out sometime complex oral and written instructions with ability to read and write and to use independent judgment.
  • Ability to work with confidential records and keep confidentiality.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Utilize Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcGIS, and/or land record database and surveying software applications to perform fundamental survey computations, drafting, data download, deed and map research, and filing.
  • Able to perform, with or without accommodation, the essential functions of the
    position.
  • Performs related work as required or directed.

Physical Demands

  • 70% – Assist experienced survey field staff performing work on topographic and
    boundary surveys, route surveys, and stream surveys.
  • 20% -Sits at desk, uses hearing, near vision and fingering for typing, word processing, computer keyboard or other office machines.
  • 10% – Moves about the office, talks to clients, callers, department staff.
  • Occasionally may handle stressful situation(s) and short deadlines.
  • Is exposed to potential for physical attack intermittently.
  • Involves minimal potential and/or direct exposure to blood or body fluids.

Education and Training Requirements

  • Interest in working in the surveying field.
  • Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered, however candidates currently in the process of obtaining a degree in Land Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or related degree is preferred.
  • Experience in AutoCARD, ArcGIS, Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation with adequate auto insurance to meet minimum County requirements, or access to reliable transportation for city and rural travel.
  • Must be able to pass a drug screen and background check.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
