Job Summary

Limited term/temporary paid student internship, assisting with various planning and Geographic Information System (GIS) projects.

Essential Duties

The student intern will be assigned various projects within the Planning & Land Services (PALS) Department including assisting with the updating of comprehensive land use plans.

The student intern will collect data and create digital (GIS) maps using software products such as ArcGIS Pro and/or ArcMap, ArcGIS Online, Field Maps (connected to GPS), and other Esri products.

The intern may develop online maps and mapping applications using ArcGIS online to support various planning & zoning projects  The applicant will need strong research skills to gather data in addition to the ability to communicate effectively through oral and written mediums.  A basic understanding of planning, GIS and cartography are expected.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

General office equipment including Windows computers

General office software such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

GIS mapping software, particularly those produced by Esri (ArcGIS Pro and/or ArcMap, ArcGIS Online, and Field Maps

Minimum Qualifications Required

Education and Experience:

High school diploma.

Position to be filled by an undergraduate or graduate student with a Planning, GIS or related background.

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge and understanding of the principles of planning and/or mapping

Knowledge to interpret complex situations and apply good judgements to arrive at solutions.

Knowledge of and ability to utilize a computer and the required software.

Abilities and mobility necessary to operate Trimble R2 GPS equipment with the iPad data collector used by the Planning and Land Services Department.

Knowledge of mapping (CAD) and GIS software.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
