General Description

The City of Madison is looking to hire GIS Interns!Two positions are available, one within the Engineering Division and the second in the Information Technology Department. Each position is described below:
- The Engineering Technology Section (1600 Emil St.) of the Engineering Division provides software, workflow, and overall support to all of Engineering’s sections. This position will work closely with the GIS specialists on a variety of projects. This position will also work on day-to-day GIS update and maintenance tasks on our Engineering-maintained databases, such as sanitary and storm sewer, pavement centerlines, and address points. This is a very technical based position where the employee will work with a variety of geospatial and data management projects. This is entry level professional GIS work performed to aid in the Division’s overall data management and maintenance processes. Assignments are received from the Engineering Technology Manager or higher-level Specialists who will set up the project, define the scope of the project, and review the work in progress and upon completion. The work is characterized by the application of geospatial theories and practices and the attainment of the procedural knowledge through on-the-job training and expertise.
- The Information Technology Department (210 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.) manages the City of Madison’s fiber optic network spanning through 160 miles of underground and aerial cable. The network supports City of Madison facilities, emergency services, traffic signals, radio networks for city and emergency services, parks, and other needs around the City. The City also partners with the Metropolitan Unified Fiber Network Consortium (MUFN-C) to help combine resources to build out the fiber network across the City of Madison and into the surrounding communities to serve the needs of the City and consortium members, which supports hospitals, clinics, libraries, schools and colleges, community and neighborhood centers, and many other sites. This position will use GIS to document and support the City’s Fiber Management Software.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
- Engineering Division GIS Intern:
Update, maintain, and Quality Control (QC) Engineering’s ACC project data, GIS data and other reports
- Add new geometry/attributes to existing GIS databases from various data sources.
- QC existing data using orthophotography, LiDAR, survey or other source data.
- Modify existing scripts and run queries for existing workflows.
- Modify and run reports out of SQL and Python.
- Run QC routines on existing GIS databases.
Other Engineering Technology tasks and data requests
- Perform GIS queries for data requests.
- Map creation for data requests.
- Help with software installs and updates.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Information Technology Department GIS Intern:
Document and support the City’s Fiber Management Software:
- Assist with documenting fiber optic infrastructure equipment in the field.
- Assist with adding fiber optic infrastructure information into fiber management software.
- Edit existing GIS layers using GIS software.
- Edit data entry for various fiber-related layers.
- Assist with coordination between the Information Technology Department and Traffic Engineering Division on fiber-related information (IDs, drawings, and other information that both agencies need to keep track of).
- Use Intermapper to do discovery on network congestion points.
Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Currently enrolled in an Associate’s degree or higher in Engineering, Surveying, Computer Science, GIS, Construction Management or other related field.
OR-
Graduates in a related field since May 2024 will also be considered.
Random selection may be used to determine who moves forward to interviews following a screening of minimum qualifications.

Engineering Division:
- General knowledge of GIS and related software
- Basic SQL and/or Python knowledge (preferred)
Information Technology Department:
- Experience working with GIS software, databases and Networking Mapping Software Programs (preferred)
- Knowledge of physical network infrastructure (Category 5e/6 & fiber-optic) (preferred)
- Desire to contribute and improve design of new and existing products
- Ability to regularly work variable hours

- Ability to meet the transportation requirements of the positions.
Physical requirements:
