Description

This internship provides hands-on experience in property listing and title research in a county government setting. Interns will assist with land record updates, property ownership verification, and legal document interpretation while gaining exposure to GIS mapping systems and tax roll preparation. Internship hours are flexible and may be scheduled between August and December 2025, with a maximum of 175 total hours.

Examples of Duties

  1. Assist in updating property ownership and tax roll data using the NOVUS land records system.
  2. Interpret and verify deeds and surveys to confirm accurate property boundaries and ownership.
  3. Perform basic title research using county Register of Deeds and Treasurer’s Office records.
  4. Support the preparation of real property assessment and tax roll data.
  5. Assist with maintaining parcel mapping information and annotations in GIS when needed.
  6. Provide general support to the Land Records and Real Property Lister staff.
  7. Assist with customer inquiries related to land ownership and parcel data.

Qualifications

  1. Candidates should have a bachelor’s or associate degree in geography, real estate, legal studies, natural resources, or be enrolled in a related degree program.
  2. Familiarity with land ownership records, property legal descriptions, title research, or GIS systems preferred but not required.
  3. Successful candidates must be independently motivated, responsible, detail-oriented, and have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  4. Willingness to learn about Wisconsin statutes related to property listing and land transfers.
  5. Preferred candidates will be comfortable communicating with the public, title companies, and county staff.
  6. Ability to work cooperatively as part of a small team.
  7. Valid driver’s license required.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Basic understanding of real estate legal descriptions and parcel mapping.
  2. Proficient in Microsoft software suite, especially Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook.
  3. Strong organizational and analytical skills, with attention to accuracy.
  4. Ability to review and interpret recorded documents (e.g., deeds, plats, and surveys).
  5. Comfortable with digital and paper-based property record research.
  6. Familiarity with GIS software or interest in learning parcel mapping tools is beneficial.
  7. Interest in government processes, land use, or public records management.
