The City of Madison Parks Division is looking for an intern to develop a series of detailed maps, specifically for its Conservation Park system. The maps will include details of the established hiking and/or ski trail system and outline the wide range of natural habitats found in the park system. Once developed these maps will be sued on the city’s park website, for printed brochures, and posted at park entrances throughout the city.

Responsibilities
– Develop accurate record of parks’ hiking and/or ski trail system using portable GPS unit.
– In conjunction with city’s mapping information, translate field data to develop detailed stylized maps.
– Make maps accessible for various uses.

Skills: The successful in tern will have excellent organizational and mapping skills. Knowledge of computer programs such as Illustrator is desirable. Familiarity with portable GPS units is preferred but not required. Familiarity with air photo interpretation is desirable.
Some experience and/or coursework is preferred in:
– Cartography
– GIS/Mapping
– Landscape Architecture

The intern must have a source of transportation. The intern will report to Conservation Resource Supervisor, with additional support from Parks Community Relations Coordinator, and Parks Planner.

Anticipated hours 10-15 per week. This internship is unpaid. Course credit may be available.
