The U.S. Geological Survey – Wisconsin Water Science Center has an immediate full-time opening for a candidate to perform a wide variety of tasks in the development and management of environmental data systems.
The Middleton Data Center manages a variety of projects, from local/regional to international in scope. We pride ourselves in using cutting-edge technologies and techniques to solve data management issues. We support a large community of customers including scientists, academics, policy-makers and the general public.
Job Details
The candidate is expected to initially work as an assistant on the USGS National Water Quality Assessment Data Warehouse project. Duties include designing, building, and managing bulk data loading plans, providing user support, writing web-based applications, developing applications using development tools, and other miscellaneous tasks. The job holds long-term potential, depending on performance and other factors.
Candidates should be highly motivated to learn new technologies and basic aspects of the nature of the datasets they will manage. It is anticipated this will likely be an entry-level position, entailing a large amount of on-the-job-training in areas the candidates is not trained or experienced in initially. Candidates therefore need to be highly motivated to learn new technologies or scientific arenas they may have not been exposed to in the past.
Minimum Qualifications
- A four year degree in the natural sciences, agriculture, engineering, or computer science.
- U.S. Citizenship
Additional qualifications (desirable, not required)
- Education or experience in project management, project planning or requirements gathering and analysis
- Training or experience working with Web-based application development, using Java-based technologies, Oracle Reports, Oracle Discoverer, or other business intelligence tools.
- Experience using Informatica PowerCenter.
- Experience using SQL, especially in an Oracle environment.
- Experience writing code in PL/SQL.
- Experience designing logical and physical data models.
