This position is located in Juneau, Wisconsin and serves as a Project Soil Scientist on the staff responsible for MLRA Soil Survey Area 11-1.

The incumbent performs various duties to manage and implement soil survey upgrade projects. This includes developing technical proposals; analyzing technical needs, gaps, or deficiencies in existing soil survey databases and products; and evaluating user needs. The incumbent assists in planning, organizing, and coordinating upgrade project activities, including staff time and other resources. Duties also include conducting soil survey activities in order to improve digital soil surveys including mapping, classification, correlation, characterization, interpretation, documentation, and product related duties. The incumbent develops proposed soil survey mapkey, map unit design, legend development, and database maintenance needs.

The incumbent performs duties related to soil survey databases and technology. The incumbent uses geospatial technologies to manipulate data that include soil surveys, soil investigations, climate, vegetation, geology, land use, and topography to ensure proper association of soils and landscape. The incumbent assists in developing soil landscape predictive models and tests and validates data for the survey area and updates computer databases.

The incumbent assists in the development and maintenance of the National Soils Information System (NASIS) according to standards and ensures that project soil survey documentation are captured in NASIS. Duties also include assisting in the development, maintenance, and testing of soil interpretations that meet local, state, and national needs; and providing support in utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS), and Landscape Modeling tools in upgrading soil survey data.
