Submerge yourself in over 230,000 acres of sustainably managed forest on the Menominee Indian Reservation while working on one of the nation’s hottest natural resource issues: Wildland and Prescribed Fire! Collect forest/fuel inventory data to develop fuels maps and analyze data to manage forest health. Methodological FIREMON assessments will provide Menominee Tribal Enterprises with data to aid in the proper implementation of fire as a silvicultural tool for ecological restoration and timber management. A variety of field and office work will be provided, including: hiking forest settings gathering field data, creating GIS maps, managing the FIREMON database, instructing others on FIREMON use, and preparing reports and presentations.
This position will be based out of or near Gresham, Wisconsin. Partners include the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Menominee Tribe. You will work directly with Menominee Tribal Enterprise’s Fuels Specialist. Work will include a combination of office and field work. You may be required to hike up to 6 miles in a day across hot, rough, terrain. Daily activities to be determined but may include using GPS to navigate to plots, collecting/recording vegetation and landscape data, analyzing and managing data, building fuel data layers for reservation GIS maps, teaching others to utilize FIREMON sampling techniques, and presenting project information and results in organized formats for reservations and National Interagency Fire Center.
