This is objective level professional work in the development, support, and use of automated records management information systems, databases and software tools for crime analysis. This level is characterized by the independent application of professional skills in the implementation of support systems and programs required for public safety problem identification and problem solving. This position will perform a variety of tasks relating to the analysis of public safety problems related to gangs and violent crime, and the initiatives to address them. This position will work closely with various teams, the Criminal Intelligence Section, and regional agencies on specific projects and requests, as assigned. This work is performed under the general supervision of the Police Information Systems Coordinator and involves considerable independent judgment and discretion with the ability to work within a team environment.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Collect, analyze, disseminate, and evaluate crime data to discover developing trends, patterns, and changes in regional criminal activity. Provide technical assistance for all GIS/Mapping/CAD hardware, networking and software, including operations support and problem resolution within Police Department. Administer and support plotting software and plotting devices. Provide liaison and coordinate system activities with management information services staff as necessary. Develop and support Internet-based access to the GIS maps and data. Develop and support utilization of the GIS maps and geographic data to display criminal activity. Produce, or coordinate production of, mapping products, presentation graphics, and data extraction for use by Police Department and various other City and regional departments on an ongoing, and ad hoc, basis. Lead Police employees involved in GIS/mapping assignments and services. Coordinate the development and administration of the databases relating to the GIS/Mapping system and other Police computer systems. Meet with various departments and law enforcement organizations to determine immediate and long-range crime mapping, geographic profiling and GIS needs. Orient potential users with diverse interests and objectives to new systems and technology. Propose solutions to identified problems. Provide training and assistance to Police personnel using crime mapping/GIS applications and geographic profiling software. Research, and evaluate new applications and systems. Develop support procedures and system documentation. Maintain a familiarity with activities and trends in the field of GIS/Mapping systems and recommend actions to improve techniques, facilities, services and procedures.
