Dr. Rissman is seeking a qualified research intern for ongoing research on the ecological and social outcomes of protected area conservation and management. The selected candidate should have experience with ESRI’s ArcGIS software and be familiar with conservation protected areas. The experience gained as a Research Intern will benefit the selected candidate through practical applications in learning spatial research methods. The position will be half-time for 20 hours per week, starting in August 2009. Depending on candidate performance, the position is expected to continue for one year with the possibility of extension beyond a year depending on funding availability. Pay is commensurate with experience; health insurance is provided.

Primary Duties

  • Help design, compile, and organize a new GIS database for protected areas research.
  • Analyze GIS data in support of research projects.
  • Help develop methods for creation of a new detailed spatially and temporally explicit protected areas map for regions of Wisconsin.
  • Contact government and nonprofit organizations to identify existing protected areas layers.
  • Search county recorder property information to identify and map conservation properties.
  • Provide general support for research activities.

Qualifications

  • Must be a recent graduate from a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in a related field.
  • Must be a proficient ArcGIS user including experience with digitizing maps and database management.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Experience with statistical analysis, research design, land conservation, public policy, real estate, and/or planning and zoning is desired.
  • Must be able to work independently, with high attention to detail and strong communication skills.
