Planning and Zoning Director

Job Duties:
The position of Planning and Zoning Director is the Department Head of the Portage County Planning and Zoning Department. This position oversees and directs a staff of approximately seventeen employees responsible for the following programs (Planning, Zoning, Land Conservation, Groundwater Management, Land Records, Business Park/Economic Development, and Geographic Information System (GIS)). The Director of Planning and Zoning is in charge of all work programs, budget, personnel, and administrative functions of the department. The Director reports directly to the County Executive and serves under the policy direction of the Planning and Zoning Committee and the Portage County Board of Supervisors. The Planning and Zoning Director and staff, subject to approval by the County Executive, also works with and provides services to the Executive/Operations Committee, Highway Committee, and Economic Development Committee, Stevens Point Plan Commission, Stevens Point Common Council, and all village and town units of government.

Special Notes:
Must reside within Portage County within one year of appointment.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in natural resources and/or urban/regional planning or acceptable related field required
• Minimum of ten years of land use or zoning experience and/or professional planning experience required.
• Experience in a public agency preferred.
• A Master’s degree in natural resources, and/or urban/regional planning may be substituted for two years of required experience.
• Member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AIP) is desirable
• Work experience shall consist of background in both city (incorporated) and rural (town and county) planning and zoning
• Minimum of one to two years of supervision experience required
• Any combination of education and experience that provides the equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position
• Possession of valid driver’s license and access to an insured vehicle for work related travel.
